Q:I am a 23 year old female who recently began taking valaciclovir, but my GP suggested I take the generic Valaciclovir. She is feeling fine with no side effects, but now she is having a headache, dizziness, and a stuffy nose. Is it safe to take Valaciclovir for her cold sores?
A:Valaciclovir can cause side effects such as headache, dizziness, nausea, and vomiting. However, these side effects are usually mild and temporary. If you experience these side effects, stop taking this medication and contact your GP immediately. This can be avoided by taking this medication as prescribed. Your GP may also be able to provide guidance on managing side effects while taking this medication.
My GP recently switched me from valaciclovir to generic Valaciclovir.

Valacyclovir is the generic form of the drug Valtrex, a treatment for genital herpes. But the drug’s safety and efficacy remain under scrutiny. In a statement, the FDA warned that valacyclovir could have side effects such as “severe allergic reactions” and “signs of bone marrow suppression.”
In the past few years, the FDA has also issued warnings about the risk of drug-induced hepatitis, a rare but life-threatening condition. The agency said in an order issued on April 20 that “the drug should not be used in pregnant women or children for whom it is contraindicated.”
The agency’s warning came after a study published in theNew England Journal of Medicinefound that women in their 20s had an increased risk of developing liver disease and a higher incidence of hepatitis C. The risk is highest among men and may increase in men as well.
The FDA has been looking into the potential risks of valacyclovir for more than a decade. The agency said it has worked with other drugmakers to address those risks and has “engaged in ongoing consultations with health care providers and regulatory agencies.”
The FDA has been concerned about the risk of hepatitis B, the virus that causes genital herpes. In a letter to a news conference, Dr. David Brennan, director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, said in December that the agency has “reached for other drugs that could be prescribed.”
But the agency has not stopped worrying about its own risk. The FDA has said it has not given any additional warning about the drug. A statement from the agency said it has “examineed the risk of the drug and determined it is not associated with hepatotoxicity or an increased risk of serious liver injury.”
In fact, the agency said in a statement that “the FDA will conduct an in-depth analysis of this serious condition and will update its recommendations as needed.”
And the agency noted that valacyclovir carries a “strong risk of serious liver injury.”
In a statement, the FDA said it has worked with drug companies to update its safety labels, and that “the FDA has carefully reviewed the risk of serious liver injury to ensure there are no known contraindications.”
The FDA has also urged doctors to closely monitor the risk of developing liver problems associated with valacyclovir. In a letter to doctors at a New Orleans clinic on July 10, Dr. James Watson, director of the Division of Liver Disease, said in a telephone interview that he had not seen a single patient who developed liver problems at the clinic since valacyclovir was first approved. He said he did not know whether the drug could affect the liver or cause liver damage. But he said there was a “strong risk of developing liver injury.”
The FDA has also issued warnings to doctors about the risk of liver problems associated with valacyclovir, including hepatitis B, liver disease. The warning came after the study was published in thethat was published in theBritish Medical Journal.
